Judy Norton became famous for playing Mary Ellen, the eldest daughter on the beloved TV series The Waltons, which aired for a decade starting in 1971 and chronicled the life of a family in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains during the Great Depression and World War II.
Now 68, Norton continues to engage with fans and has pursued a variety of creative passions beyond.
Norton hosts her own YouTube show, Behind the Scenes with The Waltons, where she shares memories from filming and answers fan questions in a segment called “Ask Judy.”
Reflecting on the series decades later, she says revisiting the episodes has been a fun way to reconnect with her teenage experiences on set and piece together her memories of the show.
Although she isn’t part of the upcoming The Waltons reboot, Norton continued acting after the original series ended. She reprised Mary Ellen in at least six TV movies between 1982 and 1997 and appeared in shows including The Love Boat, Millennium, Stargate SG-1, Cold Squad, and more.
During the pandemic, she also appeared as herself in the web comedy The Quarantine Bunch, a Zoom-based series about former child actors.
Beyond acting, Norton has explored other creative outlets. She has written and directed stage productions, co-directed over 40 shows at a theater in Winnipeg, and cultivated her love of music through musical theater, concerts, USO tours, and studio recordings.
She is also an avid equestrian, a passion sparked during her time on The Waltons when a costumer introduced her to horse shows and riding.
Interestingly, life has offered Norton several real-life coincidences reminiscent of her on-screen world.
She has noted that her home in Glendale, California, resembles the Walton family’s rustic retreat, and she has encountered amusing connections to street names like Mary Ellen Avenue, Waltonia Avenue, and Norton Avenue, echoing her TV legacy.
