Two years later we attended their high school graduation ceremony. The school principal introduced a special donor which turned out to be Claire returning after eighteen years.
She stepped onto the stage looking polished and invited our daughters up to present them with beautifully wrapped gifts.
She then announced to the entire auditorium that I had spent their whole lives keeping them away from her. Instead of accepting the presents Grace calmly took the microphone and corrected her.
She explained to the crowd about the returned letters and defended my actions while Lily added that gifts could never replace an entire childhood.
The girls left the gifts on the podium and walked straight down to sit beside me as the audience eventually broke into applause. Claire departed before the diplomas were even handed out. Five days after the ceremony I helped Lily and Grace move into their college dorms.
When I drove home alone for the first time in almost two decades I found a card they had left on the passenger seat. They wrote that my daily dedication meant everything to them.
