I thought the man I loved had vanished in Vietnam for fifty-five years. I continued to honor the pledge I had made to him when I was twenty-one by flying to his memorial each year with a white rose. However, the captain abruptly called my name over the speaker on my most recent flight and said something that stopped my heart.
When Thomas vanished over Vietnam, I was twenty-one. I’m seventy-six now, and up until this Tuesday, I believed that dying without saying goodbye was the worst thing he had ever done.
I informed him that engineers were bad boyfriends.
I was eighteen when we first met in college. He proposed to share a cup of coffee with me. He had fifty cents. I had twenty.”That’s not half,” I informed him.I’m a student of engineering. I’m able to make the math work.”
I was a literature student. He asserted that novels were innocent works featuring individuals who might resolve their issues by being open and honest.
I informed him that engineers were bad boyfriends.
For three years, he disproved me.
After graduation, everyone anticipated that we would get married. We also anticipated it.
Thomas recalled every detail. I detested raisins in cookies, my mother’s birthday, and my tests. Thomas discreetly provided goods when my father lost his job and claimed his aunt had made excessive purchases.
His aunt was a resident of a different state.
After graduation, everyone anticipated that we would get married. We also anticipated it.
Thomas completed his undergraduate education, enlisted in the military, and started his pilot training during our second year together. Letters and any time we could spend together were how we maintained our friendship.”When I return, I’ll get you a real engagement ring,” he assured me.Will you also complete the proposal correctly? I’ve already been badly questioned by you around six times.””Practice makes perfect.”
We sat on my parents’ porch till the lights went out inside the nite before he deployed.
He put his forehead to mine.Don’t let me turn into a depressing tale you recount in your later years.”Then return.”I’ll do it.
Thomas’s mother called me six months later and invited me to visit. In the living room, two officers were seated.
During a mission, his aircraft vanished. They had neither a body nor a definite crash location. In action, his status was missing.
I questioned if he might be incarcerated. One officer stated, “We can’t rule that out.”
Those words were enough to keep me waiting for years.
The next year, Thomas’s parents relocated out of state. By 1973, we had lost contact despite exchanging a few letters.
I looked through every list in our local newspaper when American inmates started coming home that year. I didn’t see Thomas’s name.
I eventually reached my breaking point. I gave up searching.
I completed my education. I was an English teacher. I became the aunt who gave absurd birthday gifts and traveled whenever I could.
I was asked out by several men. I wanted I could love some of them since they were so kind.
My sister Ruth once remarked, “You can miss Thomas and still have a life.””I have a life.”I am aware. All I ask is that you allow someone to share it.
Despite the fact that she hadn’t been harsh, I became upset with her.
She eventually stopped inquiring.
I wasn’t always miserable. I made a life I was proud of, loved my family, and cherished my students. But every time I saw a plane flying overhead, I put my palm to my heart and blew it a kiss.
I went to a memorial honoring those who are still missing from the war on Thomas’s birthday each year. I took an old picture of us outside the college library together with a single white rose.
I described my year to him.
I reprimanded him occasionally.Remember what you said you would do?
He never responded, of course.
Natalie, Ruth’s granddaughter, offered to accompany me a few days prior to this year’s visit.I answered, “I can travel by myself just fine.”I am aware. I’m not providing supervision; I’m providing company.
I almost agreed. I told her that I liked the silence after that.
Now I wish I had allowed her to come.
It was an unremarkable flight. For the most part, the woman next to me showed me pictures of her son’s wedding arrangements. I had seen eleven photos of table decorations by the time we touched down.
typical things. A typical morning.
However, as soon as I entered the arrivals area of the tiny airport, I saw a man with a picture waiting close to the only exit.
I recognized it right away.
Thomas and I, outside the college library.
I had a duplicate of the identical picture in my handbag.
I came to a standstill.
The man raised his gaze from the photo. His dark eyes and crooked smile made my stomach knot. He was in his forties.”Ms. Eleanor?””Where did you obtain that?” I inquired.
He looked at the picture.I received it from my grandfather.”Who is your grandfather?”Thomas is his name.
I held onto my suitcase’s handle. My fiancé was Thomas.I am aware.”So, who are you?”Daniel is my name. “His grandson.”
I gave a headshake.That is not feasible.
Daniel inhaled deeply.Ms. Eleanor, he’s still alive. I was asked to bring you to him by him.
I was momentarily unable to comprehend the words.”Alive?”
Daniel gave a nod.
I inquired about Thomas’s whereabouts, the duration of his disappearance, and whether or not he had been imprisoned.
Daniel took his time responding. After surviving an aircraft crash, Thomas was apprehended and imprisoned until he and other American service members were freed in 1973.So why wasn’t I informed?
Daniel paused.I’m not sure. You lost contact after the war, he informed us.”Lost contact?”He stated as much.
I gazed at Daniel.”How did you come across me?”Your college photo was saved by your grandfather. He recalled your town. I came across an item about your memorial visits and your retirement interview in the school newsletter. How did you find out that I would be here today?According to the report, you go to the memorial on his birthday each year. There is only one arrivals exit at the nearest airport. I arrived early because I had no idea which airplane you would take.”And you knew who I was?”A current photo of you from the retirement interview was included.
I took another look at the picture.
After all these years, Thomas had preserved it.Is your granddad aware that you are here?Indeed. I was asked to bring you to him.
I anticipated more.
Daniel lowered his gaze.He is really ill.
I reflected on all the years I had been waiting to hear that Thomas was returning home.
I was told by a stranger that he had lived there for decades. Was Thomas too scared to confront me directly, which is why he sent you?”I inquired.
Daniel moved uneasily. You would be delighted to see him, he continued. that both of you had lost a great deal of time.”Did he inquire about my marital status? “Did I have kids?”No, his main question was if you continued to visit the memorial.
I glanced behind him to see the individuals at the exit hugging their loved ones.I must give my sister a call.
From the airport, I gave Ruth a call.”Thomas is still alive,” I stated.
She stopped talking.
Then, “Eleanor, are you safe?” very softly.
I chuckled. It was a terrible sound.I’m not sure.”
I was invited to return home by Ruth. I stated that I needed answers first.
I asked Daniel for his complete name, phone number, and the destination he was bringing me to before I left. I forwarded everything to Ruth.
I was driven forty minutes away to a residence by Daniel. He informed me that Thomas had wed Margaret, a nurse, during the ride. Daniel’s mother was one of their two children. Three years ago, Margaret passed away.
I kept an eye on the road.”Did he recall me?””Yes.”Did he ever tell your mother about me?”Not till lately.
I looked in the direction of the window.
The house featured a wooden sign that read GRANDPA’S PLACE and flowers along the walkway.
With a blanket covering his knees, Thomas was seated next to the window.
He was eighty years old, with trembling hands and thin white hair. However, I was familiar with his eyes.”Eleanor,” he remarked.
A thousand times, I had imagined hearing my name in his voice.
There were no pictures of another woman’s family on the walls in any of those imagined times.
He extended his hand to touch me.
I remained upright.Would you just give us a moment?”No,” I replied. “I came here because of him. He is able to hear the response.
Thomas took a swallow.Tell me when you returned home.1973.
In an instant, I determined the years. You’ve spent over fifty years at home.”I have.Have you attempted to get in touch with me?
His expression became tense.I first intended to.
I held out.
He gave a fragmented explanation. He recuperated in a military hospital for several months following his release. There, Margaret worked as a nurse. When he was unable to fall asleep, she stayed after her shifts and listened. He remarked, “She knew what I’d survived.”Have you told her about me?”Yes.”And?”I proposed to her after she became pregnant.
To prevent my legs from giving out, I sat down. You choose not to return, then.It wasn’t that easy.Did someone prohibit you from writing?”No.”Did you have trouble using a phone? Please, Eleanor.Respond to me.”No.”Then sending a single letter would have been rather easy.
Thomas dabbed at his eyes.I assumed you would despise me.I might have, but at least I wouldn’t have lived my entire life waiting for someone who didn’t want to return home.”
He claimed to have written letters but never sent them. I must have finally married someone else, he reasoned. It was tougher the longer he waited. He said, “I couldn’t bear to ruin the life I’d built.”
I gave him a look. You allowed me to continue grieving for fifty years.
He started crying.
However, there was still something I didn’t comprehend.Your parents were aware that you had returned home. They were aware of my residence. Why didn’t they inform me?
Thomas gazed at his hands. When I was freed, they were informed. My next of kin was not listed with you. That doesn’t explain why I never received a call from them.
He turned his head away.I informed them that I had written to you. And?”that you were aware of my existence. that you had instructed me not to get in touch with you again.”
I gazed at him.You mentioned that to them?
He gave a nod. They took me at my word. They believed they were honoring your desires. You also lied to them.
He didn’t refute it.
Daniel was pale as he stood close to the door.He remarked, “You told us she was an old sweetheart who lost touch.”
“I didn’t know she was still waiting,” Thomas muttered.I said, “Daniel told me you asked if I still went to the memorial.” “You knew I hadn’t forgotten you.”
Thomas’s gaze dropped.
A vehicle arrived at the driveway. Peter, Daniel’s uncle, and Rebecca, his mother, entered with groceries. It seemed that Thomas had asked them to supper.
Rebecca grinned when she saw me.Eleanor must be you. Dad informed us that his first love was on the way. Isn’t this fantastic?
Thomas grabbed hold of my hand.”I hoped we could spend some time together,” he remarked. “However much time I have left. Perhaps we’ll get another shot at last.”
I thought of the boy sharing his coffee for a perilous moment.
Then I recalled all the birthdays I had spent addressing a vacant memorial.No.
Thomas blinked.Please, Eleanor.
Rebecca appeared perplexed.”Dad said the war kept you two apart.””We were,” I remarked. “Until he came home.””What do you mean?” she inquired. In 1973, your father returned home. He never dissuaded me from thinking that he was still missing, even though he was aware of this.
Peter set the grocery bags down.Is that accurate, Dad?
In a whisper, Thomas said, “I was ashamed.”
Rebecca gazed at him.”You gave her the impression that you were dead?”I thought she had moved on.”She didn’t,” Daniel remarked.
Thomas observed the expressions on everyone’s faces.Margaret was dear to me. I adore every single one of you. I was attempting to honor my family.I said, “And I wasn’t family.”
He winced.I apologize. Rebecca remarked, “I thought he’d told me the whole story.””You used to be everything to me,” Thomas said.”Once,” I said again.
Daniel took me for a walk outside. He stopped at the car and turned to face me.I apologize. I believed he had told me the entire tale. You trusted him.I ought to have inquired more.”You know to do so now.
I requested a ride to the memorial from him.
He didn’t switch on the radio while driving.
I paused in front of the stone at the memorial honoring those who had never returned home.
At the base, I set my white rose.
I didn’t put down our picture for the first time.
I pulled it out of my handbag and looked at our youthful features.I said, “I did love you.” “I won’t apologize for that.”
Daniel stood a few paces distant.
I returned the picture to my purse.
I noticed another plane via the window on the way home. Out of habit, my hand went to my heart.
I then decreased it.
Ruth asked me what I wanted to do after she picked me up.I said, “Have dinner with you.””Anything else?”Indeed. I suppose seeing the water would be nice.”
She grinned. We’ll head to the beach after that.”
