‘American Idol’ fans demand Katy Perry apologize to contestant for ‘rude’ reaction to her winning spot in Top 20

American Idol viewers have slammed Katy Perry over her reaction to the live voting results.

Once again, it appears the 38-year-old ‘Teenage Dream’ hitmaker has rubbed fans of the popular ABC talent competition up the wrong way.

On Sunday night (April 23), Ryan Seacrest stood before Elijah McCormick, Dawson Wayne, Malik Heard, and Wé Ani as the live voting began on the show.

Ani, 24, was the one who heard her name called as she advanced to the next round. Unfortunately, the other three were left without a spot in the Top 20, thus getting eliminated.

The vocalist delivered a powerhouse performance, singing Adele’s Oscar-winning song ‘Skyfall’ to prove why she deserved the spot.

According to Heavy, judge Luke Bryan told the young woman that she was “amazing” and “crushed it,” while co-judge Lionel Richie reiterated the same sentiment and added that he loves her.

However, many viewers were left angry after the ‘Fireworks’ songstress appeared to focus on who didn’t make it to the next round rather than Ani’s performance and accomplishment.

“Wé, oh my god,” Perry reportedly said during her feedback, per the outlet. “I’m just so shook right now. First of all, shook by the results, and I’m also shook by that song is so dramatic, there’s so much drama going through my body right now I need a nap.”

The drama she may be referring to is the group of three that didn’t make it, which included McCormick. The ‘Dark Horse’ singer thought very highly of him throughout the season and was a fan of his cover of Chris Janson’s ‘Good Vibes’.

The lack of acknowledgment of Ani had fans up in arms on Twitter as they demanded the Grammy-nominated singer apologize to her. One disappointed user shared: “Katy Perry needs to apologize to We Ani immediately! So dismissive because she didn’t get her choice! It’s called American Idol for a reason it’s America’s choice, not yours!”

Another person interjected: “Katy Perry needs to leave! That was very rude to show her displeasure with America’s choice of We Ani. She had the best performance of the night!”

A third user commented: “As much as I love them, I hope @katyperry and @lukebryan apologize to We Ani for not letting her have her moment and telling America they need to vote instead of applauding her performance. Ryan said move votes than last season came in, so obviously America voted!!!”

Lastly, a fourth person remarked: “Katy’s expression of disappointment was evident from the moment they said We Ani’s name. Not cool.”

Perry has often found herself at the center of what unfolds on the screen. She was recently criticized by social media users for playing a “cruel trick” on a contestant.

In addition to this, the ‘Hot n Cold’ musician was also condemned for her “mom-shaming” comments to contestant Sara Beth.

American Idol airs new episodes every Sunday and Monday night on ABC.
