Melania also addressed whether Donald is a ‘control freak’ behind closed doors
Melania Trump once gave a surprisingly frank account of what life alongside Donald Trump required, during a joint television interview recorded only months after the couple married.
The pair appeared together on CNN’s Larry King Live in May 2005, having tied the knot in Palm Beach, Florida, that January.
During the interview, they discussed their lavish wedding, their relationship behind closed doors and how the businessman’s behaviour at home compared with the demanding image he had built in public.
At the time, Donald was best known as a property mogul and television personality, years before entering the White House as US President. Melania, meanwhile, had married him after the couple first met at a New York Fashion Week party in 1998.
When conversation turned to the realities of their marriage, Melania explained exactly what she believed a partner needed to cope with life beside Donald.
As reported by Irish Star, she said: “You know, to marry a man like Donald, you need to know who you are and you need to be very strong, and smart, and he needs to know that he can rely on me.”
Her answer came as she described the trust and independence she considered important within their relationship.
Melania was also asked whether her husband behaved like a control freak at home, but she rejected that description and instead called him ‘a perfectionist’.
She said his approach to business was different from the way he acted privately, explaining that he had to be tougher while managing employees.
She explained: “Maybe he makes demands in his business because he needs to, you know, he’s kind of a general, he needs to have people in line, but not at home.”
Rather than describing a marriage dominated by Donald, Melania maintained that the couple saw one another as equals.
She added: “We are very equal in the relationship and that’s very important. We share a lot of stuff and I don’t think he’s a control freak at all”
The couple’s relationship began after Donald approached Melania at a party while attending with another woman.
Because Trump already had a date at the event, Melania refused to hand over her telephone number. However, she took both his personal and business phone numbers instead.
She eventually called him, and the pair continued dating after Donald’s divorce from his second wife, Marla Maples, was finalised in 1999.
Although they briefly separated in 2000, they reconciled soon afterwards. Donald proposed during the Met Gala in 2004, with Melania later describing the engagement as ‘a great surprise’ and adding: “We are very happy together.”
They married the following year and welcomed their son, Barron Trump, in 2006.
Melania went on to become First Lady following Donald’s 2016 election victory, before returning to the role when he began his second term in January 2025.
More than two decades after the CNN interview, the pair’s relationship is making headlines more than ever — including a claim about their ‘unconventional marriage’ and Melania’s feelings towards the age gap with the president.
