My daughter’s friends laughed when she brought a cardboard dude to graduation. The principal even made threats to prevent her from graduating. However, his face abruptly altered as Emma gave him a folded note.
“Emma, please tell me you’re not taking that thing to graduation.”
In front of the hallway mirror, my daughter straightened a blue graduation cap on a life-size cardboard figure of a teenage male.
“His cap is crooked, Mom.”
“Emma, I’m serious.”
“So am I.”
She stepped back and adjusted the matching gown. She grinned for a second. Her eyes gleamed as she turned to face me.
She murmured, “Mom, promise me you won’t tell anyone.” “I need to do this myself.”
I wanted to argue. I was aware of how ruthless kids might be when someone did something they didn’t comprehend.
However, I was aware of her motivation for creating that cardboard boy.
The only person who knew why was me.
“I promise,” I said.
I had no idea how difficult it would be to honor that commitment.
People began staring at us as soon as we walked inside the school gym.
Emma cautiously carried the cutout, encircling its cardboard shoulders with one arm. It was dressed in the same blue gown and cap as the graduates.
Someone chuckled and asked, “Is that her cardboard boyfriend?”
Another girl said, “That’s so creepy!” as she took out her phone.
A number of pupils turned. Someone began to record.
Every syllable was heard by Emma. She simply walked away after adjusting the cardboard boy’s graduation cap.
Then she was noticed by Principal William.
“Emma, absolutely not. This is a graduation ceremony, not a joke.”
“It’s not a joke, sir.”
“Then remove it. You’re embarrassing yourself and disrupting the ceremony.”
My daughter gave a headshake.
“Please. I just want him to walk across the stage with me.”
“Put that thing away, or you won’t be walking across that stage at all.”
A few pupils chuckled once again.
I got up, prepared to tell him everything.
However, Emma turned to face me and shook her head slightly.
Our pledge.
I watched her carefully lean the cardboard boy against the wall as I took a seat again.
The ceremony went on.
Students came on the stage one by one to pick up their diplomas.
The speeches were hardly audible to me.
The cutout next to the gym doors kept catching my eye.
I never would have thought to see the face on cardboard two years ago.
William then invoked the name of my daughter.
“Emma.”
She got up.
However, she picked up the cutout rather than approaching him.
“Emma!” William yelled. “I told you to leave that thing!”
She paused next to the stage steps and the microphone.
“Please, sir. Just give me thirty seconds.”
Emma spoke before William grabbed the microphone.
“Before you laugh at him again, there’s something I need to tell you about the boy in this picture.”
She took a folded piece of paper out of his gown and gave it to the principal.
After taking a quick peek at the top, he returned his attention to the cardboard boy.
His face shifted.
“Where did you get this?”
“It belonged to him,” Emma replied.
William took another look at the document.
The penmanship was familiar to me.
I then realized why Emma had spent the previous three nites going through her brother’s possessions.
“That’s a private letter,” William muttered.
“It was written to him. I think that makes it his.”
There was silence in the gym.
William turned to face me.
“Melinda, did you know about this?”
Emma responded before I did.
“Mom knew I was bringing him. She didn’t know about the letter.”
“Emma, perhaps we should discuss this privately.”
“I tried discussing it privately.”
William remained silent.
Emma turned to face the microphone.
“His name was Felix. And he wasn’t my boyfriend.”
She hesitated.
“He was my twin brother.”
There was a whisper in the gym.
Someone murmured, “Wait, Felix?”
Emma went on.
“He was supposed to graduate with us today. But he died two years ago.”
The girl who was recording put her phone down.
My daughter put one hand on the shoulder made of cardboard.
“Some of you remember him. Some probably don’t. But he went here. He sat in these classrooms. He did the same homework we did.”
I gazed at Felix’s beaming face.
The picture was taken just prior to his last hospital stay. His cheekbones were pale and his hair was thinner, but he was smiling because Emma had said something absurd.
I had a clear memory of that afternoon.
Felix had a cardiac problem from birth. For years, we tried to provide our kids with a typical upbringing while juggling prescription drugs, doctor’s appointments, and hospital stays.
His health declined throughout his sophomore year.
He occasionally skipped months of school. Assignments were sent home by teachers, and Emma brought his finished work back.
He pushed on keeping up despite his exhaustion.
“I can’t let Emma beat me at everything,” he would make jokes.
Typically, she would respond, “Too late.”
Since kindergarten, they had been competing.
Who could run more quickly? Who was the first to finish a book? who received higher grades.
Who would eventually cross the graduating stage first?
Felix was adamant that he should go first because he was born seven minutes earlier.
Emma said it will be resolved by alphabetical order.
Neither acknowledged that all they wanted was to stroll together.
Felix once asked Emma to bring him the graduation details from the school following a challenging medical visit.
He covered his blanket with the pages.
“Think they’ll let me walk with a chair if I’m too tired?”
“Obviously,” Emma replied.
“And if they don’t?”
“I’ll push you across myself.”
Felix chuckled.
“Then make sure you don’t crash me into the principal.”
I had shared their laughter.
I had no idea how much I would wish that conversation had actually happened one day.
Six months later, Felix passed away.
He was sixteen.
Emma didn’t say much for weeks.
She helped out around the house, went to school, and finished her tasks. However, I often discovered her sitting on Felix’s bedroom floor, surrounded by stuff she was unable to store.
She occasionally looked through his notebooks.
She just sat at times.
I made an effort not to hasten her sorrow.
I was having trouble with mine.
The thing that scared me the most was that Emma stopped talking about her future.
She had dreamed of going to college, traveling, and becoming a teacher until Felix passed away.
After that, she would change the topic whenever I brought up graduation.
Time would help, I thought.
Then, in January, she returned home with a folder.
“Mom, do you think the school would mention Felix at graduation?”
“Maybe. Have you asked?”
She gave a nod.
“I emailed Principal William.”
She had asked for a brief recognition of her brother and other pupils who passed away prior to graduation.
William, however, retorted that only those getting diplomas were eligible for the celebration.
Despite her disappointment, Emma continued.
She recommended putting Felix’s picture on display next to the door.
That request was also turned down.
William didn’t want anyone to be confused about who had fulfilled the requirements because the school was putting together a display of recent graduates.
Emma then inquired as to whether she could accept her diploma while holding Felix’s picture.
William insisted that everyone should participate in the same ceremony.
I said, “Did you explain why it matters?”
“Three times, Mom.”
I suggested setting up a meeting.
She declined.
“I can talk to him myself.”
I initially believed her to be obstinate.
However, she clarified what I had never fully understood while she stood in front of the microphone.
“I didn’t want a special graduation for Felix,” she declared to the crowd. “I know he didn’t finish school. I know he can’t receive a diploma.”
Her voice wavered.
“I just wanted someone to remember he was supposed to be here.”
William stood beside her, holding the letter.
Emma faced him.
“And you did remember him once.”
She reached for the paper.
William hesitated, then returned it.
Emma unfolded it.
“This letter was written to Felix when he was hospitalized during sophomore year. He kept it.”
She began reading.
“Dear Felix, your teachers have told me how hard you’re working despite everything you’re facing. Your determination and dedication make you a valued member of our school community.”
She hesitated.
“Whatever the future holds, I hope you remember that you will always have a place among your classmates.”
She looked up.
“It was signed by Principal William.”
Nobody laughed.
William stared downward.
I remembered that letter.
He’d sent it during one of Felix’s longest hospital stays.
Felix had been delighted.
“See, Mom? The principal knows I’m still part of the class.”
He’d placed it in his school folder beside assignments he intended to finish.
After his death, I’d packed the folder away.
Until now, I hadn’t known Emma had found it.
“Mr. William,” she said, “you told my brother he would always have a place here.”
William raised his eyes.
“I remember writing it.”
“Then why was it so hard to let me remember him today?”
He didn’t answer.
“I asked for his name to be mentioned. I asked about a photograph. I even asked if I could carry a picture.”
Her voice steadied.
“Every time, I was told no.”
William pressed a palm to his forehead.
“Emma, I was trying to keep the ceremony fair.”
“Fair to whom?”
The question hovered between them.
“I’m not asking you to pretend Felix graduated. I’m asking you to remember he was here.”
Several parents wiped their eyes.
But Emma wasn’t finished.
“There’s something else I need to explain.”
She turned toward Felix’s portrait.
“My brother hated when people felt sorry for him.”
She smiled slightly.
“He got so annoyed when people talked to me instead of him, like being sick meant he couldn’t answer questions.”
A few pupils smiled.
“He wanted people to remember he was funny. That he loved school. That he was terrible at basketball but kept playing anyway.”
Her smile vanished.
“Before he died, he asked me not to put his picture somewhere just to make people feel sorry for him.”
I recalled that exchange.
After a long afternoon, Felix had been sitting in bed.
Emma was assisting him with a task.
Abruptly, he asked her what she would do if he failed to graduate.
“Stop talking like that,” she admonished him.
He was adamant.
“Just don’t turn me into some sad picture everybody stares at. Make sure they remember I was actually part of the class.”
Emma had made a commitment.
I had no idea how much that promise affected her.
“I thought about what he said for a long time,” Emma added.
“And I know this looks ridiculous.”
She took a quick look at the cutout.
“Honestly, Felix probably would’ve made fun of it himself.”
The room was filled with soft laughing.
“But when the school wouldn’t let me include even a small picture, I didn’t know what else to do.”
The gown was straightened by her.
“So I made him big enough that nobody could overlook him.”
I kept my mouth shut.
Emma turned to face me.
“Mom, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about the letter.”
I gave a headshake.
She turned back to William.
“I wasn’t planning a speech. I hoped you’d let me carry him across the stage.”
He questioned, “Then why bring the letter?”
“Because I wanted to be ready if you stopped me again.”
She took a swallow.
“And because I needed to know whether your promise still meant anything.”
No one moved for a considerable amount of time.
William then went over to the microphone.
“Emma, I owe you an apology.”
The gym echoed with his shouts.
“I remember Felix. I remember his teachers speaking highly of him. And I remember writing that letter.”
He looked at the cutout.
“When you contacted me about graduation, I treated your requests like scheduling problems. I didn’t consider what I’d promised your brother.”
Emma paid attention.
“I was wrong to dismiss you. And especially wrong to embarrass you today.”
He took a deep breath.
“I’m sorry.”
Emma glanced down at Felix’s picture.
William moved to the side.
“If you’d still like to walk with your brother, you may.”
Emma was immobile for a moment.
She then gave a nod.
“Thank you.”
She raised the cutout and adjusted Felix’s cap.
A boy in the second row rose up as she got closer to the stage.
I thought I remembered him from Felix’s school days.
One more pupil got up.
Then one more.
A large portion of the graduating class soon stood.
There was no organized applause. A few quickly applauded. Others rose slowly.
However, no one chuckled.
William bided his time until Emma arrived.
He gave her her diploma.
“Congratulations, Emma.”
She took it with one hand while using the other to stabilize Felix’s cutout.
I lifted my phone.
I took the picture I had dreamed of taking years ago while crying.
In her blue gown and cap, my daughter was on stage.
Her twin brother grinned next to her.
It wasn’t the image we had intended.
However, it belonged to them.
William came up to us by the gym entrance after the ceremony.
While classmates arrived to talk to Emma, she had leaned Felix against the wall.
Many expressed regret for their laughter.
Since she hadn’t gone to school when Felix was alive, one girl said that she had thought the cutout was a joke.
Emma received their apologies in silence.
William held off until they were gone.
“Melinda, I’m deeply sorry about today.”
“I nearly broke my promise to Emma when you threatened to stop her graduation.”
He nodded slightly.
“Felix loved this school,” I remarked. “Even when he couldn’t attend, he asked about his teachers and classmates every day.”
“I should have remembered that.”
William clarified that he wants to talk to the school personnel about a permanent remembrance display.
Emma looked at him.
“Please don’t do it just because everyone heard what happened today.”
“I won’t. I’d like you and your mother to help decide what’s appropriate.”
She gave a nod.
“Felix would’ve liked that.”
She continued, saying, “I wish you’d listened before today.”
William refrained from arguing.
“So do I.”
Emma got messages that nite from classmates reminiscing about Felix.
One recalled his absurd cartoons in the margins of his worksheets.
He assisted with arithmetic assignments, according to another.
Emma displayed each note to me.
Talking about Felix made her grin more than cry for the first time in two years.
Later, I discovered her seated next to the cutout on the floor of her bedroom.
Felix’s graduation cap had been taken off and set next to her own.
Across her knees was her diploma.
I said, “Are you okay?”
She shook her head after nodding.
“I don’t know.”
I took a seat next to her.
“Did today turn out how you hoped?”
“Mostly.”
She made contact with her diploma.
“I thought walking across that stage without Felix would mean leaving him behind.”
I held out.
“But when I got my diploma, I was happy.”
“Of course you were.”
She appeared embarrassed.
“Then I felt guilty.”
I took her hand.
“Remember what Felix told you when you talked about graduation?”
She gazed at me.
I recalled what he had said.
“Promise me something, Em. If I don’t get to do all the things we planned, don’t spend your life feeling bad because you still can.”
Emma shut her eyes.
“He made me promise.”
“I know.”
“I’ve been trying so hard to remember him that I forgot that part.”
“You can miss him and still have a wonderful life.”
She examined the cutout.
“I wish he’d been there for real.”
“Me too, sweetheart.”
We sat in silence.
Emma then looked at her diploma.
“Mom? Do you think Felix would’ve been proud of me?”
I stared at the picture of my happy son.
“He would’ve bragged about you to everyone.”
Emma chuckled.
“He would’ve said he could’ve gotten better grades.”
“Absolutely.”
She rested on my shoulder.
Before long, she was discussing college once more.
about the courses she wanted to enrolll in and the destinations she wanted to see.
I paid attention.
I had been afraid over the past two years that going on would mean losing what was left of Felix.
But I finally got it when I saw Emma see her future with her brother’s picture next to her.
Felix didn’t require his sister to give up on him.
He had desired for her to continue.
Additionally, she had managed to bring him along without abandoning herself.
