Cicely Tyson, 96, died on January 28, 2021. Her death affected the entertainment business and fans worldwide. Tyler Perry, an actor and producer, wrote a touching homage to his grandma and friend Tyson.
Perry expressed his feelings on social media, calling Tyson his grandmother. He captioned a Tyson photo with his memories of the late actress. Perry said he spoke with Tyson the day before she died and promised to see her soon.
He writes, “I felt compelled to watch Miss Jane Pittman while working at the table. I hadn’t seen the film in years. I didn’t even understand watching it. God, is this you? I left the table and watched the movie in my office. I needed to watch the movie but didn’t know when I’d talk to her again.”
After the movie, Perry learned of Tyson’s death. He was devastated but grateful for one last conversation with her.
“I’m crying and heartbroken at home since I can’t reach my friend. Because I can’t call my friend, I can’t walk to her door and hug her and tell her I love her, respect her, and adore everything about her. I went to bed crying. I remembered all my times with her.”
Perry concluded his homage by thanking Tyson. He commended her for pioneering African performers and actresses.
“Tyson, Never forgetting you. You opened doors for me and others. You welcomed me to Hollywood. I got your hand and spirit. You supported me when I didn’t. I will honour your legacy. Because of you, I will always improve. Thanks for everything. Goodbye, pal.”
Tyler Perry’s touching tribute to Cicely Tyson shows her impact. Her legacy will inspire future generations, and her loved ones will always remember her.
