Shequitta Kelly is a successful judge, yet she keeps pushing herself
The Hair Shield, a satin-lined protective unit for hair extensions, wigs, and weaves, was invented by the Dallas County court. Kelly initially didn’t want to be an entrepreneur, but her idea is thriving.
Entrepreneurship wasn’t in my plans. As a bookworm, I always got good grades. I could learn anything with effort. If you given me the material and I studied it, I could learn it. Entrepreneurship is distinct. “I never dreamed of accomplishing that,” Kelly told AfroTech exclusively.
Kelly would awaken one night before a hair appointment while combing through tangled and dried-out hair extensions. She discovered that improper storage had ruined the extensions. Kelly spent her hard-earned money on new hair again, but she believed there was a solution. She searched online.
Kelly told us, “I was getting ready for a hair appointment the next day and I was just going through all this hair that was just worthless and it was distressing for me. “So, I got online and looked for a neat technique to protect and store the hair so I could reuse it and I couldn’t find anything.”
Kelly used her sewing skills to create a prototype of The Hair Shield in 2018, frustrated by the lack of options. The satin unit revives, transports, and “provides the best surface for storing extensions and ultimate quality preservation by eliminating frizz and dryness,” according to AfroTech. It keeps hair bacteria- and mildew-free.

It’s like new hair. Since making The Hair Shield, I’ve had this hair, which proves it’s not about spending so much on hair. Storage and protection are key. “If I can have hair from 2018 to 2022 that looks like I just bought it, this product works,” Kelly stated.
To be affordable, the Hair Shield costs $35.
“Black women don’t want to compromise on beauty, and we shouldn’t. Kelly told AfroTech that The Hair Shield helps ladies get a dazzling look without wasting money.
Consumers are liking the product, but entrepreneurs still learn hard lessons.
I made several mistakes and wasted a lot of money since I didn’t have a mentor. As a young entrepreneur, I made many blunders. That was frustrating because of costly blunders. Since it’s not a t-shirt, it’s been hard to promote.
She added, “Although it has been a challenge, it is my baby and The Hair Shield has blossomed. Women enjoy this high-quality product. I’m delighted I pushed it and kept learning as an entrepreneur. Unexpected blessing.”
Kelly wants her product patented. She would be one of few Black women to accomplish this. By 2023, the founder intends to obtain a few shop partnerships and hire teenagers to revive their interest in entrepreneurship.
Being an entrepreneur with a thriving firm, Kelly wants to hire many young people and people like herself. “I want to give someone a job where they can grow within the company and pursue other things like their own business or have someone like myself who can say, ‘This is how you can take your education or your career to the next level.’ That would ultimately be the goal for The Hair Shield, to affect my community on a whole other level like I can’t do as a judge.”
