Living Single gave us all the Black magic throughout its five-year run in the early-mid 90s.
The sitcom showcased a group of working-class successful individuals who navigated life and love by leaning on one another.
While most are familiar with the famous cast led by Queen Latifah, many forget or are unaware that Latifah’s mother, along with Kim Fields’ iconic actress mother, played their characters’ moms on the show.

Lawerence shared reposted a tweet on Twitter about Living Single stars actual mothers playing their moms on the show. “Not enough of a big deal is made that Kim Fields and Queen Latifah’s actual mothers played they’re moms on #LivingSingle. It’s a legendary Black History moment,” he wrote.
Latifah’s mother, Rita Owens, had no prior television experience before the show.
She made her first TV appearance as Khadijah’s (Latifah) mom. The mother-daughter pair were partners in crime until Owens sadly passed away in 2018 after her struggle with heart failure.
Fields’ mother, Laverne “Chip” Fields, has been in the business since the 1970s. She’s most-known as playing the physically and emotionally abusive mother to Janet Jackson on Good Times.
In one episode from season one, “She Ain’t Heavy, She’s My Mother,” Khadijah James and Regine Hunter’s mothers come to visit for Mother’s Day. In another episode, “To Grandmother’s House We Go,” Khadijah and Regine send their mothers on a trip to the Bahamas for but while they’re gone they have to look after Khadijah’s grandmother.
