I am deeply saddened to inform you of the untimely death of my lovely wife, Hailey Marie Okula, who suffered problems during childbirth. The intensity of the loss I feel is beyond words. I could never have imagined a better wife and partner than Hailey. She was beautiful, intelligent, diligent, enthusiastic, reliable, and most importantly, incredibly loyal.

She supported me through my darkest moments for almost 13 years, showing me unending love even when I didn’t feel deserving of it. She was everything to me.

The difficult IVF procedure He also talked about their shared emotional journey, which included the IVF procedure: “Hailey’s strength was unparalleled.” There are no words to express how much we longed to have children. We were thrilled to be expecting Crew following years of infertility issues and a drawn-out, difficult IVF procedure. Even though her body endured a lot, Hailey never faltered in her love and bravery as she overcame every obstacle. Recalling a particularly poignant instance, Matthew said: “I will always remember the day I sobbed and expressed my regret for the toll the procedure would have on her. “We are a team, and we’ll get through this together,” she replied, holding my face and meeting my eyes. Hailey was that person. A combatant. A colleague. A woman who would sacrifice all for those she cared about. After nearly two years of battling infertility, Hailey announced in September that she and her husband, Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter Matt Okula, were finally pregnant. She could communicate with her son. She shared her delight on Instagram on September 16 and described the event as “indescribable.” “Without going too much into detail about my journey, the journey has been hard, but so worth it,” she wrote in her passionate post. According to KTTV, the couple’s baby, Crew, was delivered via cesarean section on March 29. Reporter Hailey Winslow revealed that Hailey Okula and her kid had a quick but memorable encounter during which she joked about “how big he was” after taking one glimpse at him.

Matthew talked about Hailey’s unending love for their kid, despite the unfortunately short time she spent with them:

Even though her time with us was tragically brief, Hailey loved Crew unconditionally before he was even born. She would have made the most wonderful mother. Our kid and everyone else she touched will carry on her strength, love, and energy.

Matt Okula told TV reporter Hailey Winslow in an interview with KTTV that his wife died of amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), a rare and deadly illness.

AFE happens when amniotic fluid enters a pregnant woman’s bloodstream shortly before, during, or right after childbirth, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Cause of death for Hailey Okula

In the United States, amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare but dangerous illness that affects roughly 1 in 40,000 deliveries, or 0.0025% of births.

Although rare, AFE is the second most prevalent cause of maternal death from childbirth and the major cause of postpartum heart attacks, according to Healthline. Unfortunately, over 60% of women who encounter AFE do not survive, according to the Mayo Clinic.

It can occur with C-sections as well as vaginal births.

Hailey Okula informed the nurses that she wasn’t feeling well just two minutes after giving birth, just before she went into cardiac arrest.
“A minute later, the doctor comes in and lets me know that they’re doing CPR on her,” her husband, Matt Okula, described the harrowing incident.

Then he had to make the unthinkable choice: “Am I staying with my newborn baby or am I going to the intensive care unit with my wife?”

“Not a decision we thought I’d be making,” Matt recalled, adding that his wife had wanted to have children “so incredibly bad.”

Another heartwarming experience was recounted by Matt, who had been on the front lines of the Palisades Fire earlier this year.

He said that his wife was able to glimpse their son for “a split second”—a moment he will “always remember.”

The revelation saddened Hailey’s fans, who had been following her reproductive journey with great interest. Hailey has more than 200,000 fans on TikTok and hundreds of thousands on Instagram. Many of them expressed their sympathies and talked about how Hailey’s candor had aided them in their own battles with infertility.

“I’m devastated. One follower wrote, “I’m sending you and your family all the love.”
