The race is on to see who will own a majority stake in BET. Both Tyler Perry and Diddy have been rumored to be in talks to purchase a majority stake in the most prominent black entertainment television network. Both media moguls have access to millions of capital, but which person would be best suited to take the network to the next level?
Tyler Perry has built a billion-dollar empire from the ground up. The producer often reminds people of his early days of struggling. At one point, Tyler Perry had to sleep in his car and only had 80 cookies to his name. Now he’s rumored to be placing a bid to purchase a majority stake in BET. The partnership would make perfect sense considering the media mogul has already collaborated with BET on their streaming service, BET+. Tyler Perry also has many shows and movies on the network, including Sistas, Assisted Living, Zatima, and House of Payne.
On the other hand, Diddy has a similar story when it comes to building on the ground up. However, he made millions by creating a music empire. In addition to being a super producer, Diddy has launched his own spirit line- Combs Wines & Spirits (Ciroc), a clothing line, and a media company, REVOLT TV. The announcement of Diddy’s bid to purchase a stake in BET Network came days after Tyler Perry.
According to Diddy, he wants to see everyone come together and make BET black-owned again. The producer requested that Tyler Perry, Issa Rae, and others come together to repurchase the network.
