Chaka Khan, the legendary singer known for her big voice and substance issues, has been married twice and has two children. Her son Damien Holland, born in 1979, has had a difficult life living in the shadows of his superstar mother.
In 2004, Damien made national headlines after an altercation took place at Chaka’s Los Angeles home. Holland moved in a 17-year-old named Christopher Bailey with the goal of producing music for the aspiring rapper. When Damien discovered that Bailey was sleeping with his girlfriend, an altercation broke out, which resulted in Bailey losing his life.
Chaka stood trial and supported her son through his case, and Damien was eventually acquitted in 2006. However, he admitted to lying about several things, including having a friend punch him in the face and pretending it was Bailey who punched him so that he could say he had probable cause to “defend himself.” Chaka and Damien were asked to pay $1.3 million to Christopher Bailey’s family, with Chaka’s mother reportedly contributing $500,000.
Damien’s legal troubles continued in 2015 when he was found in possession of a stolen vehicle in Beverly Hills. He was arrested and booked on identity theft and possession of stolen property charges.
In 2011, Chaka took over raising Damien’s daughter, Daija Jade Holland, who was ten years old at the time. Court filings revealed that both Damien and Daija’s mother were addicted to drugs and could not properly care for her. Chaka’s daughter Tammy McCrary is listed as Daija’s legal co-parent.
Despite Damien’s troubled past, Chaka still loves her son and recently wished him a happy birthday in a video message posted online. While Damien did not appear in the video, fans in the comments wished him well.
