A 10-year-old boy has died after getting into a fight with another child at a trampoline park in California, police have said.
Anthony Duran, 10, had been playing basketball with friends at the Rockin’ Jump Trampoline Park in Merced at around 5:00 PM on April 13 when the incident occurred.
A physical fight had broken out between him and another child, according to reports from KFSN, before Duran collapsed to the floor unconscious and the other children ran away.
Tragically, Duran ended up dying from his injuries four days later, Merced Police Department announced.
Police added that the Merced County Coroner’s Office is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of the young boy’s death.
The other child involved in the fight has also been identified and police have been in contact with their parents. No details about the child in question have so far been revealed.
The Merced County District Attorney’s Office is working with police to review the case and determine if any charges will be filed.
Duran’s Junior Varsity Coach Jack Booker shared his heartbreak, telling News 11: “At first, I didn’t believe it. I was in denial. Who would expect anything like that to happen,” adding that he was “devastated” by the news.
Nellie Barragan, a family friend added to KFSN that she does not believe a medical condition contributed to the child’s death, explaining: “He played football, was in boxing. He just finished basketball. He had no health problems. That’s what they’re saying is that maybe it was a medical condition. It was not.”
A GoFundMe was also set up by Duran’s aunt, who wrote: “Anthony Gained His Wings 4/16/23 I ask you in this time of need with any donation for my nephew’s mom now that she has to lay Anthony to rest.
“We want to give him a proper burial. Thank you for all the love and support you have given Anthony.”
