A zoo in eastern Hangzhou city has come under fire for allegedly passing off a human in a bear costume as a sun bear after a video was uploaded to the Chinese social media platform Weibo.
The animal appears to be standing and waving in the video.
In a statement written from the bear’s perspective, the zoo denied the rumors.
“Some people thought the way I stand up looks too human… so I will stress again: I’m a sun bear,” the message read.
The bears’ short legs and fuzzy folds, which give them the appearance of people wearing bear suits, attracted attention to the photographs.
