A Brazilian mother is dead after eating poisoned chocolate that she got on her 54th birthday.
Lindaci Viegas Batista de Carvalho is dead, and her family believes it may have been a well-thought-out hit. After she stepped out of her boyfriend’s beauty parlor in Rio de Janeiro, the woman collapsed in pain after eating one of the sweets. Shortly before eating the chocolates, Carvalho received threatening calls and messages. She even accepted one troubling call from a “suspicious” mail courier that told her they had a package for her. She asked the courier to deliver them to her boyfriend’s shop, which they did. That call came through on May 20th, and just days later, she was gone.
Her family also says Carvalho initially didn’t want the chocolate but believed they were from her ex-husband after he joked that he’d gotten them for her as a birthday present. Since Carvalho was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, she was unable to give any details about the candy and her contact with it. The chocolate was in a traditional box, and she also received flowers along with them. Her son also tried a piece of the candy but quickly spit it out because of its taste.
Carvalho’s ex-husband spoke with investigators and said he was only joking about sending her chocolate and maintained he had no idea how she obtained them. The victim’s sister, Lenice Batista, says the death was “very macabre, very premeditated,” but she is not convinced that her former brother-in-law is the culprit. Instead, Batista and the police have turned their attention to the ex-girlfriend of Carvalho’s current lover. Authorities have called her the “main suspect.”
“We have evidence of her making threats, a picture of her holding a weapon with a threatening message for my sister,” Batista confirmed.
No arrests have been made yet, and the investigation is ongoing.
