Maia Campbell was a promising actress, singer, and model in the ’90s. Maia Campbell is a native of Takoma Park, Maryland. Her parents, Bebe Moore Campbell, and Tiko Campbell, were both established authors and writers. Bebe, in particular, was beloved and well-known for her work. They raised Maia in Ladera Heights, a neighborhood in Los Angeles. Maia would find her big break in John Singleton’s 1993 flick Poetic Justice opposite Janet Jackson, Tupac Shakur, and Regina King. She played Shante, the cousin of Tupac’s character Lucky.
She also scored several TV roles that same year, appearing on Thea before getting a recurring role on South Central. In the House would follow, become her most popular role to date. She played Tiffany Warren, a teenage girl left in the care of LL Cool J’s Marion Hill. For five seasons, fans got to watch Maia grow up, and many were excited about what her career would go following the series. Maia also became a fixture in music videos, most notably starring as the love interest in Tyrese Gibson’s “Sweet Lady” and “Lately” in 1999.
It’s unclear when, but life got hard for Maia, and she began to turn to drugs amidst her battle with mental health and the passing of her mother in 2006. Maia was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and appeared on an episode of Iyanla Fix My Life, where she details the depths of her descent. This all came on the heels of a viral video of her sitting in a car cursing someone out. By the time she landed in Iyanla’s care, Maia had already lost her daughter, her husband, and her career. However, it seemed like she was eager to get better. “I was torn apart due to the custody battle of my daughter,” she told Iyanla.
Iyanla had a personal relationship with Maia’s mother, Bebe, and felt a responsibility to help the fallen actress. Following their intervention in 2012, Maia was off the radar for a bit before reappearing in 2017. In another viral video, this time, Maia is seen at a gas station asking for money. She was in her bra and underwear in Stone Mountain, GA.
After the video went viral, LL Cool J tried to step in and help Maia. However, she sent him a video response saying that she did not need the help. “Hey Todd, look, bro, I love you. I don’t need help; I just need a benefit concert for mental health,” she told LL. As she walked away from the camera, she instructed LL, “don’t call me; I’ll call you.”
All of her social media accounts have been dormant since 2020, but fans have left her comments as recently as last week wishing her well.
