Because of his intelligence and athletic prowess, Kristofferson was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study English literature at Oxford University. But his real calling was in music. Against the wishes of his family, he left the Army and moved to Nashville to pursue a career as a songwriter.
In the 1960s, Kristofferson performed odd jobs to break into the music industry, such as cleaning at Columbia Recording Studios. He persisted, and as a result, musicians like Ray Stevens and Johnny Cash recorded his compositions. Kris Kristofferson and Cash’s rendition of “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” took home the 1970 CMA Song of the Year title.

Kristofferson became a household name in the 1970s with hits like “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Help Me Make It Through the Night.” His songs often dealt with love, grief, and forgiveness, which helped him become a legend in the country music industry.
In movies like “Cisco Pike” (1971), “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” (1974), and “A Star Is Born” (1976), he starred in starring roles. For the latter, he was awarded the 1977 Golden Globe for Best Actor.

In the 1980s, Kristofferson established The Highwaymen with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kristofferson. They served as the movement’s public face. As long as he performs, records, and acts, his influence on American society will never be completely eliminated.


Despite his health issues, Kristofferson continued to work until his retirement in 2021. His most recent album, “The Cedar Creek Sessions,” released in 2016, demonstrated his continued brilliance.
